Guatemala: A state of land grabs

Pamela Bassett's insightful article for Belize's Amandala newspaper looks back at Guatemalan history to examine both its impact on rural communities in both countries. Going as far back as when European colonisers arrived in the area, through 19th and 20th Century histories of revolution, independence and a new local Criole elite taking over, the article exposes a brutal history of land grabbing of indigenous and campesino lands. What it also uncovers are the same tactics and practises of land expropriation going on in the 21st Century.
